DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
As one of the few companies in Toronto, even in Canada, that uses alternative modes of creation and performance, we feel compelled to share our unique approach to theatre with as many of our fellow artists as possible. To do this, the company offers professional workshops to artists that focus on introducing new artistic skills.
Participants in the program stretch and challenge their creative boundaries as they are introduced to Theatre Gargantua’s unique artistic practices. Working with company members, artists learn new skills in the areas of physical movement and choreography, text development, musical composition, and ensemble creation.
Workshops are offered throughout the year and have attracted over 500 artists in the past decade. Many of our workshop graduates go on to excel in some of the country’s foremost theatre and performing arts institutions.
1-Day Dynamic Creation Workshop (April 11 &12 and Summer 2012)
Led by core members of the Gargantua ensemble. This workshop offers a rare and exciting opportunity for professional actors to experience Theatre Gargantua’s critically acclaimed method of creating imagistic, physical, music theatre. Participants will be instructed in Theatre Gargantua’s distinctive style of creation, including training in movement, voice, and text exploration and creation. Working closely with Theatre Gargantua’s core creative ensemble, actors will be given tools to develop original movement and vocal compositions, and will learn how to integrate these creations with text.
4-Day Gargantua Intensive Artist Lab (Summer 2012)
Led by core members of Theatre Gargantua, this four-day workshop offers a rare, intensive exploration of the creation model of Gargantua’s highly physical theatrical style. During the 4-day lab, artists will have the opportunity to create original work using different technological tools.

“As I was a part of the sequence I was able to be aware of the fact that this movement was inspiring, uplifting, courageous. In many of my theatre experiences lately the theme is to condemn, shock, accuse, I was happy to celebrate a different feeling, a different want: positivity. So refreshing.”
Taylor Graham, workshop participant
MENTORSHIPS
Theatre Gargantua recognizes that future performers, directors, designers and producers need opportunities to evolve and we are committed to contributing to the development of their potential. Students will get to experience our creative process & production, with the choice between an artistic or producing mentorship.
Looking Forward, Seeing You
Our company applies a distinct process to the creation of original theatre works, which are developed over a two-year period. This process allows our ensemble members to experiment and develop their ideas and inspiration through various outlets – text, music, movement, and design – and facilitates the creation of some of the most exciting and original theatre in Canada.
Gargantua’s emerging artist hopefuls have two roads they may consider: Artistic and Producing.
An artistic mentorship allows students the opportunity to follow the development of our latest cycle and experience first-hand our unique creative process. Students are invited to all workshop presentations and asked to join the company at certain stages of a cycle’s development, affording them an invaluable learning experience.
The producing mentorship provides students with hands-on training and experience in key aspects of producing our work including marketing and publicity strategies, fundraising, budgeting and contracts negotiation – required skills for any successful arts administrator.
Gargantua also recognizes that the roles of administrators and artists don’t have the clear boundaries they used to. If you’re an exceptional young artist bridging the gap, we’d like to hear from you too.
Since its inception in 1999, the mentorship program has met great enthusiasm, with numerous participants pursuing successful careers in the performing arts.
