STUDENT PERFORMANCES
A memorable and exciting theatre experience – show them something new!

Theatre Gargantua’s multidisciplinary productions have proven to be high in pedagogical value. Throughout the course of 9 original cycles, we have been inspiring students of drama, music, dance, English, creative writing, new media & visual art.
The CBC said “anything by Theatre Gargantua is a must see.” Last year we sold out all of our student matinees within 7 days! Don’t miss this fabulous opportunity for you and your students.
With each show, we ensure to include daytime performances with educators in mind. These special performances allow teachers to share the Gargantua experience with their students, exposing them to our unique method of multi-disciplinary performance. Original physical and vocal arrangements, creative set and lighting design and even video projections are all part of a signature Gargantua production. This style of performance is perfect for demonstrating to students the versatility of theatre, as well as group creation/collaboration on stage.
We also incorporate talkback sessions after each matinee performance giving the students an opportunity to learn more about the creation of theatre directly from the creators and performers.
For a full Gargantua experience, we offer workshops with the Artists in conjunction with a performance. These workshops when taken with attending a performance gives students a unique insight into the creation and methods employed in our productions, a truly comprehensive theatre experience. These workshops are also available all year-round and do not need to be taken in conjunction with a performance.
STUDENT WORKSHOPS
Developing Young Artists
Taking part in a workshop led by Theatre Gargantua offers students an illuminating experience into the creation of original performance. Our workshop techniques are based on structured improvisation, allowing students the freedom to explore and expand their artistic boundaries. As an ensemble, students discover physical, textual and vocal compositional skills, and are encouraged to follow their creative impulses, developing their own movement, text and song. By the conclusion of the workshop, students will be challenged to integrate all elements, shaped through Theatre Gargantua’s signature style of multi-disciplinary theatre.
Each season we work directly with secondary and post-secondary students, providing them with skills in song, movement and text creation techniques.
Workshops are ideally suited for drama, dance and music students in secondary and post-secondary schools and can be adapted to meet the specific needs of the course curriculum.
“I had so much fun with at this workshop and the amazing group of people i had the pleasure of working with. I hope I hope i have another chance to do this again, or something like it. Thank you so much Theatre Gargantua for this wonderful opportunity.”
— Ashly Johnson, 2011 workshop participant
Dynamic Creation Workshop
Gargantua’s model of theatre creation focuses on physical and vocal training, as well as text development. Our signature workshop allows students to explore this model through basic acrobatic work, song and text creation. Students will develop performance skills, enabling them to combine their text work with music, rhythm and movement.
Physical Training
Theatre Gargantua’s physical training emphasizes core-body strengthening using Pilates exercise methods. Basic acrobatic work develops body awareness and encourages students to be involved and responsible in partner and group work. Students are introduced to the first stages of creating and choreographing allegorical movement.
Vocal Training
It is Theatre Gargantua’s belief that song serves as one of the most powerful performance elements. We structure our vocal training in such a way to promote singing and vocalizing as a natural source of expression. Students will explore their voices through melody and rhythm, while learning methods of song creation, in a non-judgmental, encouraging environment.
Text Development and Exploration
Working with either found or original text, participants will be encouraged to explore a range of different interpretations that exist. Students will develop performance skills, enabling them to combine their text-work with music, rhythm and movement.
“My students were thoroughly impressed…a great learning experience that challenged students, broadening their horizons”
— Sylvia Goncalves, T.A Blakelock High School
Theatre & Technology Workshop
Theatre Gargantua has created a BRAND NEW workshop for secondary schools. Now you can book either type of workshops: our signature workshop (above), or our newest creation!
In addition to exploring physical theatre in a devised format, students get to investigate the role technology plays within theatre, including using projection technology and learning song composition with music editing software.
The Theatre & Technology workshop explores the interplay between physical theatre and projection, sound recording and song composition. Through the use easy-to-use editing software students will interact theatrically with improvised song and soundscape creation. Student also get to create and instantly publish text onto a large projection throughout the workshop. Through this one hour workshop, students will devise their own original theatre piece that incorporates live and recorded sound, projection and text.
