Producing Assistant – Paid Summer Internship

Role and Responsibilities

Theatre Gargantua is seeking a committed and talented individual for a paid summer internship position. Working in tandem with the Artistic Director and Administrator, the intern will receive on-the-job mentoring and experience in producing independent theatre and managing an independent theatre company. The Producing Assistant will assist with preparatory producing and community relations work for the upcoming season; specifically:

  • Assisting the Administrator and Artistic Director across all areas of producing
  • Assist with At-Risk Youth & Education programs and workshops that are held      during the summer; research potential partners and participants
  • Make connections with the community neighbourhood
  • Research potential new funding partners – foundations & corporate, artists liaison, contracts, etc
  • Rehearsal room support
  • Maintaining company database
  • Ensuring contract riders are provided for artists
  • Assisting with Production Budgeting / Reporting; Marketing and Press relations
  • Liaison with Board of Directors
  •  Assisting with Donor Database Management
  • Assist with Special Event planning
  • Assist with managing volunteers
  • Assist with operation of the production office
  • Other administration as required.

Person Description

This position is ideal for a candidate in a Theatre or Arts Administration program and an excellent opportunity to learn and gain experience in the development and producing of new theatre, and well as office operations, connecting with the community and building an even better connection with local businesses and residence.

Required:

  • Must have been enrolled in a post-secondary institution, and have the intention of returning as a student in the fall.
  • Arts Administration Education and/or Experience – with an interest or designation in theatre-mainly utilizes the skills taught in these programs, covering everything from publicity, financing and development. The ideal candidate would come from this field of study.
  • Public Relations Education and/or Experience – Theatre publicity is an avenue that requires the knowledge, skills and abilities learned in Public Relations programs such as, writing skills, strategic planning, critical thinking and creative initiative.

This is a full-time contract which will take place between June and August Pay: $10.25/hr

Artistic Internships

Role and Opportunity

Theatre Gargantua is seeking TWO interns who are serious and committed to pursuing a career in the performing arts.  Our internship program is designed to provide an opportunity for emerging artists to expand their skills and experience through observing and participating in Theatre Gargantua’s creation cycle.  Specifically, participants will attend all rehearsal and creative meetings while simultaneously assisting in areas of production (e.g. set, lighting, costumes, stage management, and director assistance) and administration (e.g. publicity, marketing and promotion).  Through this program, interns will develop new skills that will be useful in future artistic and producing endeavours.

The interns will be required for all development, rehearsal and performances phases occurring between June 10th through to the production of The Sacrifice Zone at the Factory Theatre in Nov 2013. Primary phases are 2 weeks beginning June 10th, week of July 29, and 10 weeks in Oct-Nov, other dates TBC.

Successful applicants will have a background in theatre and an interest in multi-disciplinary work and/or the collaborative creation process. Applicants should be prepared to make a commitment to the full length of the project, including attendance at all rehearsals and performances and for all creative meetings. Interns will receive an honorarium for their participation.

New: Media Artist in Residence Fibber - Theatre Gargantua

Theatre Gargantua creates groundbreaking original multidisciplinary performances in our distinct two-year cycle. Our work melds physical performance, original a cappella scores, text and multi-media technology and design into award winning productions. We have recently set up a comprehensive workspace for the generation of multimedia and are inviting expressions of interest from artists wishing to be considered for a media-artist-in-residence opportunity.

The Media Artist in Residence program will offer an artist creating media for the theatre access to a multi-functional workstation complete with the latest software and tutorials, including design, music and video editing software, and real-time media manipulation software, to develop their skills in an area that continues to rapidly gain traction in contemporary performance.

The residency is fundamentally artist-driven; the artist is invited to create and develop new work while developing and honing their design and editing skills. During the residency, the artist will be encouraged to engage with themes of their choice and Gargantua will provide mentorship and access to our creative process. The artist will have access to the workspace one-day a week from May-November, hours and times to be arranged between the artist and the company.

Eligibility & Criteria

The Media Artist in Residency program is open to theatre and performance artists wishing to expand their knowledge and media skills, and to pursue their creative and professional potential in multi-disciplinary arts. The Media Artist will have:

▪    Demonstrated the potential for artistic and technical development

▪    Commitment to engage with Theatre Gargantua programming, themes, images and ideas.

▪    Self-motivation and ability to work independently.

▪    Ability to work co-operatively, respectfully and responsibly in an open office environment

General Audition Call

Founded in 1992, Theatre Gargantua’s productions meld daring, evocative physicality, bold imagistic sets, striking original vocal work and the innovative use of emerging media and video technologies. The company devises all original Canadian works in a two-year creation process we refer to as a Cycle. Our work is built form the ground up and our stories are often generated from within the ensemble of artists. Since its inception 9 Cycles have been completed, with a 10th to premiere this Fall. Theatre Gargantua has garnered dozens of nominations, awards and recognitions for categories including Outstanding Production, New Play, Direction, Music, Set Design and Lighting Design. The company has toured works provincially, nationally and internationally to critical acclaim.

Performers interested in working with Theatre Gargantua should be in very good physical condition, able to sing well (please indicate range) and have a strong interest in creating original, innovative theatre. Our General Auditions will focus on an introduction to our methodology for upcoming projects.

Professional Development Workshops

Led by core members of the Gargantua ensemble including; Jacquie P.A. Thomas (Artistic Director), Michael Spence (core member), and Diane Niec (core member).

This workshop offers a rare and exciting opportunity for professional actors to experience Theatre Gargantua’s critically acclaimed method of creating imagistic, physical, music theatre.

Participants will be instructed in Theatre Gargantua’s distinctive style of creation, including training in movement, voice, and text exploration & creation. Working closely with Theatre Gargantua’s core creative ensemble, actors will be given tools to develop original movement and vocal compositions, and will learn how to integrate these creations with text.

Non-Equity Members: $95
