Theatre Gargantua is thrilled to announce their latest work in development: The Sacrifice Zone – a dynamic investigation into the harrowing pursuit of justice in a manufactured resource industry town. This international collaboration with celebrated Australian playwright Suzie Miller and her company The Uncertainty Principle represents the first public performances of Gargantua’s 10th Cycle of Work.

The creation process began by exploring the human instinct for fairness, and our unquenchable need for justice. In our chaotic, competitive universe, justice is a paradigm that defies objective definition. Instead it is shaped by our lived experiences, our values, and the ways we choose to see the world around us. Gradually the question emerged: how much would you sacrifice to make things right?

This new cycle has already undergone three development phases this year, which will culminate in two public performances on November 23rd and 24th, before the work goes back into its next phase of development. The final installment of the work will premiere in the fall 2013.

Click here for information on our high school and university presentations from November 19th to 22nd, and click here for more information about the first public presentations of this work-in-progress. 2 shows only – November 23rd and 24th, 2012.

In 2005 the congregation at our old venue and home was threatened with eviction from their own parish. St. Stephen-in-the-Field plays a vital role in the inner-city community and a group that included Theatre Gargantua quickly formed, calling themselves Friends of St. Stephens. The result of this group’s efforts was a concert held at the church with a spectacular line-up, including Bruce Cockburn, Daniel Lanois, Jane Siberry, Michael Ondaatje, and many others, including our humble selves. The concert was an enormous success, raising $14000 and securing the congregation a place in their home. Now a CD of the Concert for St. Stephens has been released on True North Records. Have a listen to Track 8 for a medley of TG’s greatest hits.

TG’s tenth cycle has officially begun with the initiation of our first development workshop. For the first creative sessions of our 20th season it seems most appropriate to be back at St. Stephen’s-in-the-Fields Church, our home for so many years. The place has theatrical history that runs deep into its mortar, and we at TG are most proud to represent a good portion of that history. Each of our works has had at least a portion of its development happen at St. Stephen’s, so it certainly felt right to continue the tradition with our current cycle. The room is burgeoning with talent and energy, not the least of which is embodied in Australian playwright Suzie Miller who has joined our wildly creative team. The Sacrifice Zone (formerly called The Justice Project) runs November 19th-24th.

4. A character I have loved playing is

Martha in a student production of Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf

5. The best piece of advice someone once gave me was

Don’t have a back up plan

6. The most challenging thing about working on this show and a new work is

Pretending that screw ups were on purpose

7. The book beside my beside table right now

The Flying Troutmans by Miriam Toews

8. The last song I downloaded or listened to was

Show and Lights by Explosions in the Sky

9.My favorite moment in rehearsal so far is
