November 2011 marks the WORLD PREMIERE of IMPRINTS. In association with Factory Theatre, we are extremely proud to present the final instalment of this new work in the Factory Studio Theatre from November 9-26, 2011.

IMPRINTS tells the fantastical tale of Lily, a woman haunted by the ghosts of her ancestors. While undergoing an experimental procedure for an incurable disease, she is inadvertently transported down a very peculiar rabbit-hole. There she encounters the ghosts of her genealogical past and discovers alarming keys to her present.

Inspired by current theories on genetic memory and taking them further in a mix of science and fantasy playwright Michael Spence explores the ghosts of our ancestral past by imagining them as existing within our genes. IMPRINTS examines the countless generations of intimate strangers that make up our lineage and how their experiences are manifested in our instincts, fears and dreams.

Artistic Director, Jacquie PA Thomas has brought together a fabulous creative ensemble including Stephanie Belding, Cosette Derome, Conor Green, Ron Kennell, Kat Sandler and Michael Spence. Dramaturgy by Bruce Barton. Design team includes: projection design by Cameron Davis; set design by Michael Spence; lighting design by Laird Macdonald, costume design by Sheree Tams and sound design by Michael Laird and William Fallon.

IMPRINTS is two years in the making. Don´t miss out! Tickets on sale now.

Why Donate?
Gargantua continues to push the boundaries of multi-disciplinary theatrical arts in Toronto. For each cycle of new Canadian work, we collaborate with numerous artists from a variety of disciplines. We experiment with cutting edge technology through which we discover new creative forms of expression. Our non-traditional method of creation allows for more people and more time to be spent on developing the cycle of work. We have a 20-year history of training and mentorship by providing innovative, accessible workshops as well as artistic opportunities for youth. Your support will help further the creation of new Canadian multi disciplinary theatre and help provide new, engaging opportunities for youth to get involved in artistic creation in a meaningful way.

Meet Stephanie Belding: certified personal trainer, adventure racer, athlete, singer, dancer, actor and multi-disciplinary artist who will soon be making her Theatre Gargantua debut in the upcoming production of IMPRINTS.

A graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada, Stephanie began her physical theatre training at John Abbott College in the Professional Theatre Program, working in Laban technique, authentic movement, contact-improv, modern and contemporary dance. Stephanie has worked in regional theatres across Canada, spent three seasons with The Shaw Festival and toured musicals throughout North America. A recognizable television/commercial and film actor as well, IMPRINTS marks Stephanie´s first foray back onstage in Toronto since 2008 when she appeared in “The Great Gatsby” at Lower Ossington Theatre with the Classical Theatre Lab.

ASK GARGANTUA:
How do you rehearse for your productions?

We are an artist driven company and work together to create all of the original music, physicality and choreography which we fuse with other multi-disciplinary tools and technology to create our work. Practically, we ensure there is plenty of time to create and meditate on ideas and give our bodies the right amount of recovery time throughout the entire rehearsal process. We engage in multiple workshop series during the development year. This past year we spent two weeks as a resident company at the University of Toronto.

We worked with professional artists, graduate students and professors. If you have a question for Theatre Gargantua please email

With special thanks to TD-Financial, we welcome to the creative team this cycle, our new artistic interns, Charlotte Gowdy and Samantha Wan.

Both have a keen interest in producing their own theatrical work. A key part of the internship involves them in the rehearsal process, shadowing the director attending production, design and dramaturgical meetings. They also spend time in the office, learning about the administrative side of things from Gargantua Producer Stacey Norton. Charlotte and Sam bring a wealth of energy, excellent instincts and a strong desire to create new work and we are thrilled to have them join us.

“Seeing the amount of work it takes to put a show together is incredible. As an actor, this internship has opened my eyes to all the other systems that are in place to create a production. I have particularly enjoyed being a part of devising new Canadian work and learning something new everyday” – Samantha Wan

“This internship is an incredibly exciting, enriching, hands-on educational experience. I feel so lucky!” – Charlotte Gowdy

Theatre Gargantua´s Emerging Artist RoundTable was established last January to bring together senior level University and College students from various theatre programs around the GTA. The group meets once a month for four months to bring hot ideas to the table and to connect with all of our networks, interests and ideas.
We launched our second RoundTable group this September with eight individuals. We started off with a bang and immediately delved into the big topics affecting the Toronto arts scene today. There are three more sessions to come and we couldn´t be more excited! RoundTable members include: Nicole De Angelis, Veronika Brylinska, Tanya Elchuk, Laura MacKay, Thomas McDevitt, Tajiki Morris, Amanda Smith, and Eli Speigel. The next RoundTable group will launch in January 2012. If you are interested in joining, please send a letter of interest and your theatrical resume to info@theatregargantua.ca by Friday December 16, 2011.

WORKSHOPS
This summer we launched a brand new Artist Development Program — the intensive 4-day Lab. Led by Artistic Director Jacquie PA Thomas, Associate Artistic Director Michael Spence and core member Diane Niec, eight artists engaged in an in-depth exploration into Gargantua´s highly physical theatre style and dynamic creation methods. The workshop was a huge success and we are planning on continuing the program next summer. Sign up fast because last session sold out!

YOUTH OUTREACH
This summer we launched Phase Two of our Youth Workshop Access Initiative Program. Through the generous support of Telus and Friends of Community Schools, over 400 youth participated in Phase One workshops at the end of their school year. A dozen youth joined Gargantua for a day-long intensive workshop teaching the integration of technology in theatre. In the coming year, we look forward to the continuation of this exciting program.
