Theatre Gargantua presents the first phase of the 10th cycle of work
THE SACRIFICE ZONE
By Suzie Miller
Directed by Jacquie P.A. Thomas
We were thrilled to showcase our latest work in development: The Sacrifice Zone – a dynamic investigation into the harrowing pursuit of justice in a manufactured resource industry town. The international collaboration with celebrated Australian playwright Suzie Miller and her company The Uncertainty Principle represented the first public performances of our 10th Cycle of Work last November.
Artistic Director Jacquie P.A. Thomas and playwright Suzie Miller first met in Quebec City during rehearsals for Robert Lepage’s new show, Playing Cards with his company Ex Machina, and discovered a shared affinity for similar philosophies and aesthetics. Once Thomas revealed that Gargantua’s next development cycle was exploring the idea of justice, Miller’s work as a human rights lawyer seemed a perfect fit. Another Gargantua collaboration was born.
The creation process began by exploring the human instinct for fairness, and our unquenchable need for justice. In our chaotic, competitive universe, justice is a paradigm that defies objective definition. Instead it is shaped by our lived experiences, our values, and the ways we choose to see the world around us. Gradually the question emerged: how much would you sacrifice to make things right?
This new cycle underwent three development phases, culminating in two public performances last fall, in the Factory Theatre Studio, before the work went into its last phase of development. The final instalment of the work will premiere in November 2013.
Details about the 2013 premiere will be available at www.factorytheatre.ca this September 2013.
