Jacquie P.A. Thomas, Artistic Director

Jacquie is the founder and Artistic Director of Theatre Gargantua. She wears a plethora of hats within the company, giving her various titles such as Director, Actor, Music Director, Composer and Writer. She has been nominated for 10 Dora Mavor Moore Awards for artistic contributions to the company over the years. In addition to her artistic duties she has acted as Executive Producer since Gargantua’s inception.

In the spring of 2004, Jacquie’s contributions to the independent theatre scene were recognized when she received a Harold Award. Selected credits of work outside Gargantua include the Ossetynski Actors’ Lab in Los Angeles, Roy Hart Theatre in France, The National Theatre of Greece and the Gardzienice Theatre Association of Poland.

Michael Spence, Associate Artistic Director

Michael Spence is Associate Artistic Director and an award-winning, long-standing member of Theatre Gargantua’s creative team. He has appeared in all of TG’s productions and has written or designed for many of the company’s noted works. His script for The Exit Room was nominated for Outstanding New Play at the 2000 Dora Mavor Moore Awards, and twice he has taken home awards for Outstanding Set Designs. In 2004 Spence was a recipient of a Harold Award, a distinguished honour for members of the Toronto independent theatre community. He grew up in Markham, Ontario and studied theatre and environmental studies at the University of Guelph. He is also an accomplished musician, having once earned a living playing guitar and dulcimer in Toronto’s subway stations.
